The Club sponsors field trips during non-snow months for members to add to their collections. Many of the trips are to the “poor rock” piles at old copper mines.
There are occasional trips to collect iron minerals elsewhere in the Upper Peninsula.
In 2018 there were also trips to an amethyst mine in northern Ontario, and to a former silver mining district in eastern Ontario.

Copper and silver – the most sought minerals locally, have the advantage of being found, unseen, by metal detectors. For this reason, prior to a field trip the club has the surface of a pile bulldozed to remove the previously searched material which exposes “fresh” ground for collecting. Also exposed are other local minerals such as porcelaneous datolite, prehnite, epidote, and a variety of other gangue minerals which, must be sought visually.

Club access to rock piles for field trips is always with permisson from the owner and is covered by Club insurance. Although collecting is often allowed on some piles belonging to public agencies it is the Club’s practice to not suggest or recommend collecting on any piles.
